Episode 8: Convergence Craziness

This week, the boys dive head first into Convergence #1. Since we aren’t fully up on DC’s history, we give the publisher some tips as to how to draw in new readers. Also, we can’t help but to continue loving Jeff Lemire’s Descender.

Brooks read through his backlog of 25 comics, so we quickly run through a rapid-fire review of each. To finish, we decide we’ll still wait through all the end credits for Age of Ultron, we’ll most likely binge watch Daredevil before next week’s episode, and please no Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff.

  • Runlovekill #1 (Image) – Sought after by elements from her violent past, fugitive and assassin Rain Oshiro has just 24 hours to escape a barricaded city while trying to evade a military force determined to either capture or kill her.

Episode 7: Nothing to Read

This week, the boys tried to review Drones #1 from IDW, but didn’t follow the news closely enough to realize IDW has had some recent delays in shipments.

Instead, topics of conversation include a follow up to We Can Never Go Home #1, comics from last week, a full slate next week, recap pages, Daredevil and finding an actual first issue to read for the next episode.

6: Purchasing Problems

This week, Brooks reviews the latest first issue, We Can Never Go Home, while Alan explains his troubles trying to purchase it (spoiler: he couldn’t). Brian K. Vaughan takes over Twitter, Batman & Robin is ending, Preacher starts casting leads, and much more comics talk.

Also, at the end, the boys relive their childhoods in anticipation of Inspector Gadget’s return.

4: Quack!

This week, the boys review the week’s most popular (we assume) comic, Howard the Duck #1. We also question what’s actually happening in The Surface to finish our weekly reviews.

Discussion topics include Brubaker/Fraction/Aja’s Immortal Iron Fist, Marvel’s ability to create diverse characters, Big Man Plans #1, DC upping the price of its comics and Jada Pinkett Smith leaving Fox’s Gotham.

3: The Le-MEER Show

In this week’s episode, we made sure to learn the correct pronunciation of Jeff Lemire’s name so that we could properly discuss his awesomeness. Both weekly first issues were written by Lemire — All-New Hawkeye #1 at Marvel and Descender #1 at Image.

Spoiler alert: we loved them both.

We also talk Marvel’s upcoming Secret Wars, the return of the Runaways, Dragon Ball Z, the latest Avengers trailer and diversity within comics movies.

2: Will Hawkeye Ever End?

In this week’s episode, we praise Matt Fraction and Kelly Sue DeConnick on their deal with Universal, but question Matt as to when his run on Hawkeye will ever end or if he even enjoys writing the title.

We discuss the current run of Hawkeye while adding All-New Hawkeye (by Jeff Lemire) to our new release list of next week. The theme sticks with Lemire, and the pronunciation of his last name, because we add a second book of his to the list — Descender, with Dustin Nguyen at Image.

1: The Snyder Boys

In episode 1, Brooks once again confuses creator names, while we freely admit that we’re not into the Spider-Verse.

Follow up:

We move on to review Plunder #1 and decide it’s okay if you want to skip this. It’s only a four-issue miniseries, so it’ll be easy to come back and knock it out if you’d like, but the first issue contained more shock value than substance.

We choose two #1s to read next week: Curb Stomp (Boom! Studios) and Mister X Razed (Dark Horse). In the final arc, we talk the upcoming Deadpool movie, as well as the Fight Club sequel that is coming to comics this year.
